I believe “disease” is one of the most important words in this phrase! We have a disease that most people think of as a “moral issue,” but with advances in science (F-MRIs) we can now see this disease in our brains and if we had cancer or diabetes, we may not be as hard on ourselves as us addicts/alcoholics can be.

Once our disease has been triggered, we’ll look for other things to give us that dopamine (neurotransmitter) fix: love, food, gambling and things outside of ourselves even when we may not be using a “mood-altering” substance.

Steps 10, 11 & 12 seem to help me the most in recognizing when I’m either in “controlling” or “avoidance” mode.
