I remember being confused as well. What I needed was someone who has had an experience with the steps and share it with me. I have worked the 12 steps of AA by using the Big Book and a Sponsor. I needed to read the book and then have my Sponsor share his experience with me. His experience made it easier for me to understand the directions in the book. You are taking a great first step and reaching out for help. Stay in touch and we are here to help!

    Hey Jessica –
I remember thinking…12 steps??…how are 12 little steps going to drag me away from my drugs and drinking. Then I was faced with either death or life…I chose life and went to treatment and got the help I needed. I was introduced to the 12 steps of alcoholics anonymous, a sponsor and being of service! The easiest thing I did (my experience) was walking into an AA meeting and saying I need a sponsor to take me through the steps and to work with me. As soon as I found a sponsor they worked me through the steps. I remember the first thing she asked me was, “are you willing to go to any length” and I said yes. The next thing she asked was, “do you have the desire and are willing to stop using drugs and alcohol”…that is where my life changed forever…I said yes because I knew I didn’t want to die. I knew I was powerless over drugs and alcohol and my life had become unmanageable so I needed help. The best part about this process is I’m never alone, it is a WE program and everyone is here to help no matter what. I love going into the rooms because I’m not unique and everyone gets exactly what I’m saying, it’s an amazing feeling of fulfillment to finally find a place where I can say whatever is on my mind and people totally get where I’m coming from. I did the 12 steps with my sponsor and have stayed in recovery, it truly works, if you work it. The promises do come true that the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous talks about if you work for it and by reaching out here you have already taken a step in the right direction. Keep asking and go to a meeting, find a sponsor and be of service! 🙂 Look forward to hearing from you again! Keep posting about how you are doing! Heidi

They really don’t have to be worked. It’s all just a suggestion.
