Carbon Reduction Plan
Commitment to Achieving Net Zero
HOPCo Ltd is committed to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
This commitment supports the UK Government’s Net Zero strategy and the NHS’s ambition to deliver net-zero healthcare, while reflecting HOPCo Ltd’s role as a digital health and orthopaedic services organisation.
Baseline Emissions Footprint
Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were generated prior to the introduction of targeted strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions provide the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.
Baseline Year: 2022
HOPCo Ltd has a well-established environmental management policy; however, 2022 represents our first year of comprehensive greenhouse gas reporting across Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions, calculated in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.
The assessment identified that the majority of HOPCo Ltd’s emissions arise from business-related travel, particularly flights, reflecting the organisation’s national and international collaboration within the healthcare and digital health sector.
Emissions Reduction Targets
HOPCo Ltd recognises the importance of reducing its carbon footprint to help mitigate the effects of climate change and to support the NHS’s commitment to delivering net-zero healthcare.
Using 2022 as the baseline year, HOPCo Ltd commits to:
- A minimum 50% reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions, and
- Achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.
These targets exceed NHS net-zero timelines and demonstrate HOPCo Ltd’s commitment to accelerated decarbonisation.
Carbon Reduction Projects
The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or are planned to reduce emissions across Scope 1, 2 and 3 activities.
Business-Related Travel
To reduce emissions associated with business-related travel, HOPCo Ltd has implemented and will continue to implement the following measures:
- Promotion of virtual meetings: Video conferencing and remote collaboration tools are used as the default option, reducing the need for in-person meetings. The majority of HOPCo Ltd staff work remotely.
- Sustainable travel choices: When travel is necessary, staff are encouraged to use public transport, low-emission travel options, and electric or hybrid vehicles where available.
- Carbon offsetting: Carbon offsets will be used only for residual emissions that cannot reasonably be eliminated, in line with UK Government and NHS guidance, and sourced from reputable, verified providers.
Energy Use and Equipment
To reduce energy consumption associated with office operations and cloud-storage services, HOPCo Ltd will continue to:
- Use energy-efficient equipment: Prioritising energy-efficient laptops, monitors, and IT equipment, and replacing legacy equipment with more efficient alternatives when required.
- Optimise cloud infrastructure: Working with cloud service providers to optimise data storage, consolidate resources, and utilise virtualisation to minimise energy demand.
- Renewable energy considerations: Exploring opportunities to use renewable energy sources where feasible, including renewable-powered cloud services.
- Sustainable procurement: Where possible, selecting business equipment made from recycled or sustainable materials, including stationery and office furniture.
Commitment to Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Healthcare
In addition to reducing its own operational emissions, HOPCo Ltd is committed to supporting the reduction of carbon emissions across orthopaedic care pathways and beyond.
This includes:
- Enabling remote monitoring solutions that reduce the need for in-person appointments
- Supporting virtual consultations, reducing patient and clinician travel
- Promoting more efficient, digitally enabled models of care aligned with NHS sustainability goals
These initiatives contribute to reduced Scope 3 emissions for the wider healthcare system while improving patient access and experience.
Governance and Continuous Improvement
Responsibility for the delivery of this Carbon Reduction Plan sits with senior management at HOPCo Ltd. Progress against emissions targets will be reviewed annually, with actions updated to reflect performance, improved data quality, and emerging best practice.
HOPCo Ltd is committed to continuous improvement through:
- Ongoing emissions monitoring
- Stakeholder engagement
- Adoption of innovative technologies that support sustainability
