The Washington Redskins tight end has been suspended for the second time in his short, disappointing career. He followed up with an arrest for DUI the next day.

It only goes from bad to worse for Fred Davis.

A once highly touted tight end who was tagged as a franchise player, Davis has managed to shoot himself in the foot twice in two days, first by violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy for the second time, and then for being arrested for driving under the influence.

After testing positive for a banned substance, Davis was suspended without pay and will begin serving it immediately. “I would like to clarify the circumstances that resulted in my current suspension. In the past, I made the mistake of knowingly ingesting a banned substance,” Davis said in a prepared statement released by the NFL Players Association. “For over two years, I’ve worked very hard to eliminate marijuana from my life, and I have not had a positive test for it since 2011. Unfortunately, a couple of months ago I took a supplement that contained a banned substance.”

“I now know that supplements are not regulated by the FDA and may contain banned substances. The NFL Policy is strict, and not knowing that a supplement might contain a banned substance doesn’t excuse a violation of the policy,” Davis’ statement continued. “I’ve worked closely with the NFLPA and NFL to resolve this violation, and I will be permitted to apply for reinstatement in the fall. I look forward to staying in football shape, remaining in compliance with the NFL policy, and having a chance to get back on the field to contribute to a team’s success next season.”

With Davis suspended on Wednesday, the tight end drowned his sorrows on Thursday and wascharged with driving under the influence in Fairfax County, VA. Davis was arrested at 3:45 p.m. at the corners of the appropriately named Gallows Road and Leesburg Pike. Fairfax police offered no further details about his arrest.

Davis has been something of a problem child ever since joining the Redskins in 2008. He was suspended for four games in 2011 for violating the same drug policy.
